Sandy Ridge Community Baptist Church

History of the Church

On a beautiful elevated spot, about two miles from the Village of Stockton, NJ stands a historic old stone edifice known as the Sandy Ridge Church.  The congregation of this church dates back to 1812.  There was no regular place of worship in these early years, so the Pastor held services in various homes in the community, traveling everywhere on horseback. This continued faithfully until January 1818, with nineteen members signing the constitution.

In June 1866, the corner stone of the present church was laid, there were 268 active members then.  In 1888, the first Ladies Aide Society was organized, and two of the stained glass windows show their organizational name.  Many anniversaries and celebrations have come and gone, with additions and upgrades continuing.  Of special note, is the Christian Endeavor stained glass window, which is the only one, awarded of the state of New Jersey.  The other stained glass windows were installed in 1919 at a cost of $680!! Now they are priceless.

In 1958 Sandy Ridge became a community church. An activities building was added in 1963. January 21, 1968 commemorated 150th anniversary.

May 20, 1978 started off as just another quiet Saturday day, but by 6:20 am something terrible had happened in the Sanctuary.  Half of the old ceiling had given way, falling and causing a near disaster.  Services were held downstairs for many months to come.  The pews were refurbished, another ceiling installed and the beams were exposed.  Then the front wall was cleared of plaster, repointed, and the Cross was put in place.  A dedication service was held October 8, 1978. A new lectern was added, and later the balcony was restored in time for Easter, 1981.

In March, 1999 Sandy Ridge Church was realigned with the American Baptist Churches of New Jersey after 41 years.  Being a member of the American Baptist gives us wider fellowship and vision.

With each year, many things continue to be done, and celebrated.  We encourage you to become a part of our Church, and to join in on the growth and activities.  For more information, please contact Pastor John Valiant at (215)-297-0236.
